Science
... Keeping Warm ...

Our assumptions:
1
Learning Intention:
To understand that thermometers are used to record temperature
Instruction and differentiated activities:
*What is ‘temperature’ - identify as a source of energy
*Use examples to explain conduction (relate this to how thermometers work)
*Discuss how to treat and use thermometers
*Examine thermometers and test:
- room temperature
- hand temperature
- warm and cool water
*Record common temperatures on a thermometer
*Lesson 1 - Word 2000 Lesson Plan
Resources:
*Thermometers
*Thermometer Diagrams MA, LA
*Containers of warm and cool water
ICT Opportunities:
*
2
Learning Intention:
To understand that meassuring apparatus are an accurate way of finding information
Instruction and differentiated activities:
*Revise states of matter (water freezes at 0 and boils at 100)
*Test warm and iced water first by estimating from feel
*Look at thermometers (and how to read them)
*test again
*Lesson 2 - Word 2000 Lesson Plan
Resources:
*Cold and warm water
*Thermometers
*Thermometer readings HA, MA, LA, SEN
ICT Opportunities:
*
3
Learning Intention:
To learn that hot things rise
Instruction and differentiated activities:
*Set up and conduct experiments to demonstrate convection
-snake coils placed over a warm place, e.g. radiator
-warmed food colouring into cold water
*Discuss causes of convection
*Lesson 3 - Word 2000 Lesson Plan
Resources:
*clear container (for food colouring experiment)
-water
-food colouring
*spiral snake pictures to cut out (for LA) - not included
ICT Opportunities:
*
4
Learning Intention:
To insulate against heat loss
Instruction and differentiated activities:
*Identify requirements of a fair test (and a control)
*Use a range of insulators, insulate beakers of warm water – take a before and after reading
*Use results to identify which materials were most effective as insulators
*Lesson 4 - Word 2000 Lesson Plan
Resources:
*Group Recording Grid
*Graph -HA
*Graph - MA
*Graph - LA
*Graph - LLA
ICT Opportunities:
*
5
Learning Intention:
To insulate insulate cold substances
Instruction and differentiated activities:
Identify what children did last week
*Repeat activity but insulate against cold loss (in winter beakers with chilled water do well on the radiator)
*This should be quicker than last week - so a longer time can be spent during plenary, identifying exactly what an insulator is.
*Lesson 5 - Word 2000 Lesson Plan
Resources:
(same as last week)
*Group Recording Grid
*Graph -HA
*Graph - MA
*Graph - LA
*Graph - LLA
ICT Opportunities:
*
6
Learning Intention:
To investigate conduction
Instruction and differentiated activities:
To identify that some substances are good insulators, and others are good conductors
Resources:
*
ICT Opportunities:

*

Extra activities could include:
Investigate uses of insulators and conductors
